How Big Do Cockapoos Get? [Measurements + Photos]

When we’re talking about dogs, size matters. How big do Cockapoos get? It all depends on the type of Cockapoo and its growth spurts. Detailed statistics and averages are listed inside this article.

Adopting a dog isn’t something to be taken lightly – aside from caring for your pet, you’ll also have to consider practical restraints like your available living space, and personal preferences when it comes to having a canine companion. Dogs come in many shapes and sizes, so it’s no surprise that determining the size of a breed you haven’t met before can be confusing.

In case you’re considering adopting a Cockapoo puppy, you do not need to wonder anymore. The Cockapoo is a wonderful dog to have as a pet, and it’s only natural for you to be curious about this intelligent and unique breed, and whether it’s the right size for you.

Types of Cockapoos [How Big do Cockapoos Get?]

Cockapoos can generally be classified into three sizes. These types are differentiated on the basis of the type of Poodle which is used in breeding.

Teacup and Toy CockapooMiniature CockapooStandard Cockapoo
Height10 inch (25 cm)11-14 inch (35-40 cm)15-18 inches (38-45 cm)
Weight8-10 pound (3.5-5 kg)13-18 pounds (6-8 kg)up to 25 pounds (11.5 kg)

Toy/Teacup Cockapoo Size

A toy or teacup cockapoo is a result of a Toy Poodle or Teacup Poodle being used in the breeding process.

Such a Cockapoo usually weighs around 8-10 pounds and grows as high as 10 inches. A small dog like a Toy Cockapoo is easy to care for if you live in the city, and aren’t looking for a massive-sized dog.

They’re easy to handle as they are smaller dogs and weigh close to nothing. This means that it won’t be much of a nuisance if they try to pull on their leash while you’re walking them.

A Teacup cockapoo completes its entire growth spurt within six months. As they are much smaller dogs, they do not take a long time to attain full growth.

Miniature Cockapoo Size

A Miniature Cockapoo dog is bred with a Miniature Poodle as its parent along with the Cocker Spaniel. They are a relatively bigger breed, but still easily manageable. A Mini cockapoo can weigh about an average of 15-18 pounds.

An average Miniature cockapoo can attain an approximate height of 12-14 inches.

They are still considered easy to handle as they are not all that bigger than a teacup Cockapoo. They are heavier in comparison, but not so heavy that they’ll take you for a ride. If you are a city dweller, it would still be an amazing idea to have a miniature cockapoo as your pet.

This breed attains full growth in approximately nine months, after which they cease to grow anymore. They are extremely active dogs, so it shouldn’t be a problem to get them to go on a walk. And if they do tug on their leash, you can fight against their weight of 15 pounds, right?

Standard Cockapoo Size

If a standard Poodle is used in the breeding process, it will result in a standard Cockapoo, otherwise known as the Maxi cockapoo (yes really – some people call them by that name).

A standard Cockapoo is the largest kind, with an average weight of approximately 20 pounds.

These dogs can grow up to be as high as 18 inches, making them much taller than any of the other Cockapoos.

You may find it tough to have such a dog breed in the city, especially if you live in an apartment. Such dogs are preferred by house owners living out in the suburbs – with ample space by means of backyards and lawns, giving a standard Cockapoo all the room they need to run around and play.

As mentioned before, cockapoos love the outdoors, and if you have a yard, it would be a great idea to build your dog a small kennel. This way they can spend as much time playing outside as they may wish. However, when you take them out for a walk on a leash, it would be safe to assume that they may pull with all of the Cockapoo’s weight behind them, and it may be difficult for you to handle this breed on a walk if you aren’t strong enough to do so.

An average Maxi Cockapoo can take almost a whole year to reach full growth. They are relatively larger dogs and hence take longer to grow completely. The larger the Cocker Spaniel Poodle Mix the longer the growth cycle.

A reputable breeder will have a hsitory of the animals involved. They can use this to determine an approximate size of the dog your adopt. A Cockapoo breeder producing F1b Cockapoo dogs or F2 Cockapoo dogs will have more information and predictability. The more Cockapoo generations involved – the more predictable tge size of dog.

When both of the parent breed dogs are in fact Cockapoos (F2 and F3 Cockapoo) then the Cockapoo breeder should have size prediction down to an art form.

Cockapoo Growth Spurts (When do Cockapoos STOP Growing)

While it is true that all dogs experience a growth spurt, some are very obvious, while others you may not even notice.

In cockapoos, for example, the Teacup cockapoo is tiny and hence may not experience much of a growth spurt. They attain full growth within six months but still remain small, so there isn’t much growth to see at all.

Contrary to this, with a Miniature cockapoo, you may observe a growth spurt somewhere around their fifth month. You may begin to notice excessive and unnecessary barking.

Cockapoos don’t have to stop growing after they have reached the full growth age. They just stop growing in height. You may still continue to notice a growth in muscle depending on how much exercise your dog is getting.

This could also be said when it comes to fat. Whether your dog is widening out because of fat or muscle can easily be decoded by observing his day-to-day behaviour. If your dog is very active, plays around a lot, and does a lot of exercise, it is obvious that their muscles are growing. However, if your dog has a good appetite, then fat could be the reason for their growth. Either way, you will be able to tell if you keep a close eye for a week or so.

Cockapoo: Pros and Cons

The Cockapoo is a fun-loving designer dog and an excellent companion dog that any family would be lucky to have.

However, they do need a lot of exercise, so you must be ready to commit some time to take your mixed breed dog out for a walk, or to the park, etc. It would be advisable for you to set aside some time every day just for your dog.

Cockapoos are a very smart and intelligent hybrid dog. However, they tend to bark a lot and quite often. Cockapoos tend to bark when they get excited, and that could be quite a few times daily. However, they can be trained to bark less. It just depends on how well you train them.

Compared to some other breeds, it is quite easy to train a Cockapoo. You will need to dedicate some of your time to this endeavor. While training the breed might be easy, it is not at all easy to maintain.

A Cockapoo may be a low shedding dog, but that does not mean it is 100% hypoallergenic. However, it is descended from the Poodle, which means it could be hypoallergenic to a certain extent. The Poodle parent coat is curly – so if you have a curly or wavy Cockapoo coat then you have a chance of it being hypoallergenic.

You would need to take exceptional care with their grooming – which has to be done fairly regularly and thoroughly.

While they may not shed much, a Cockapoo will shed its puppy coat for the adult coat to develop properly. You must be sure to take special care of them during this experience. With daily brushing, Cockapoos will develop thick, luxurious coats which look adorable especially on this designer dog breed.

What is the Origin of the Different Sized Cockapoos?

Cockapoos are a designer breed that resulted from crossing the poodle and the cocker spaniel. Initially bred in the United States back in the 1960s, dog breeders aimed to produce a healthy companion dog – one that would inherit the best traits from both parent breeds without picking up their common health issues.

Today, just over six decades later, the cockapoo has become something of an international phenomenon. They’re the third most popular hybrid dog breed in the world, and have been seen in the arms of several celebrities – read on for more on that.

The Cockapoo is a loving dog who is quick at making friends. They’re active and enjoy regular play. Cockapoos tend to love the outdoors and also happen to be incredibly smart – they’re considered to be an easy breed to train.

A Cockapoo could sense a human’s mood and attempt to fix it; many times they may even manage to succeed in making you smile. For the half-century or so that they’ve been professionally bred, it’s no surprise that many Cockapoo owners have come to regard their pets as affectionate, loyal companions throughout their lives.

Some Facts About Cockapoos

Celebrities are particularly interested in this dog, and quite a few have been seen with cockapoos in the past. To name a few, One Direction heartthrob Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, and even Minka Kelly have been seen with their pet cockapoos.

Another fun fact about Cockapoos would be the various other names it has gotten over the years. Some call it a cockapoodle, while some have even resorted to shortening the name and calling it a spoodle.

Call it anything – it doesn’t take away from the cuteness of the dog.

Cockapoos are packed with insanely high energy levels and are great at making friends as well. They gel well not only with humans but with other animals as well. The downside to all that energy is that they need special attention and playtime, or they’ll quickly get frustrated and anxious. You also need to take your cockapoo out for regular walks. But hey, if Harry Styles can do it, so can you.

A Cockapoo comes not only in a variety of sizes as aforementioned but also in a variety of colors. You could get a black Cockapoo (or a black Goldendoodle), or a red, brown or even golden color Cockapoo. Sometimes you may even find a mix of these shades. It’s like a whole shade card of colors, and you get to decide which one you will take home.

This may come as a surprise, but cockapoos are one of the few dogs that do not smell. That is, if you groom them right and keep them clean. But cockapoos do not leave that strange dog stench around the house and on your clothes and everywhere else. If they do, it’s possible that they may have developed an infection, so stay regular with those vet visits.

They are an exceptionally smart breed of dogs and are very hard to fool. They are also known to be used as therapy dogs. Their general friendliness and playful nature work wonders with children and adults alike, and it’s rare to find a cockapoo unwilling to engage and play.

Cockapoo Parentage

As mentioned, the Cockapoo is a crossbreed of two exceptional dog breeds; the Cocker spaniel and the poodle. The name Cockapoo is derived by clubbing the two-parent names together.

The Poodle is a smart purebred dog and quite easy to train. Poodles, however, aren’t quite as friendly as the other parent dog – a Cocker Spaniel. They do take their time warming up to strangers. However, they’re more than willing to be affectionate after forming a bond with someone – many owners wake up to find that their poodles have snuggled up to them in the middle of the night.

The Cocker Spaniel, on the other hand, has always been a smaller dog. The Cocker Spaniel was originally bred for hunting game, and so they are easily trainable dogs. Comparatively,  cocker spaniels are warmer in temperament and quicker to make friends.

Both the Poodle and the Cocker Spaniel are amazing dogs individually. However, when they come together, the resulting Cockapoo is twice as amazing. A Cockapoo is a cute little dog that even celebrities can’t deny.

To Sum Up

Whether you live in an apartment in the heart of the city, or at a house in the suburbs – it matters little, as you have enough choice between the kinds of Cockapoo you’re looking for.

Choosing the right dog breed is important, as it will grow to become an integral part of your family. However, regardless of its size and weight, a Cockapoo is so cute it could make your heart melt right then and there. Though these dogs are quite high maintenance they are worth every cent.

There’s no need for you to overthink it. The Cockapoo is the right choice for your family. It could be an itty-bitty Teacup Cockapoo or a Maxi Cockapoo – it doesn’t matter. It will love you the same. And as it grows as a part of your family, you will only reciprocate that love tenfold.
